“SNAP is a stabilizer, not a permanent state.” That’s the theory, but not the reality. The reality is that, for many, it is a way of life. In fact, living on government handouts has become a “right” that is passed from generation to generation. This is by design. Lyndon Johnson’s “Great Society” programs were designed to “keep ‘em voting Democrat for the next 200 years.” This has now expanded to illegal aliens living on Food Stamps and other government handouts, for exactly the same reason (i.e., to keep ‘em voting Democrat).
I was on Food Stamps for a couple of years in my younger days, but it did not become a “way of life” for me. In fact, when my elderly mother could not make ends meet with her Social Security, my brothers and I met her needs for the last 10 years of her life. That’s the way it should work.
The ironic part is that if all the people on Food Stamps had voted Republican, the government would not be shut down, and their welfare benefits would not be cut off. In that respect, they’re getting what they voted for.
My neighbors are a family of six. Dad has part time job. They are not married so mom gets taken care of like a single mom. Food stamps are a way of life for them. Her oldest is 14 years old and has never known anything else.
They’re only doing what they want to government trained them to do.
That's true. I knew a woman in the same situation. I really liked her and it broke my heart for her child being raised to know how to live off the system and nothing else. But if they had it a bit more difficult, they would act.
It’s sad really. It’s also become generational. We have several generations of folks living in rental assisted housing. Grandma, mom, and granddaughter all in separate apts. And the granddaughter will train her daughter on how’s it’s done. It’s sad really. Three generations that never realized their own potential, because the government stepped in and became provider.
I have seen too many who, with well and professionally manicured hair and nails, moan about missing their EBT because it is their right. How they afford it is a mystery. But I know both parties have been to blame for too much spending because it is so easy to make promises to get votes, and there is no consequence especially after leaving office.
That being said, there is more to this Democrat "leverage" maneuver: the Cloward-Piven Strategy, which has 4 steps:
~ Overload and Break the Welfare System
~ Have Chaos Ensue
~ Take Control in the Chaos
~ Implement Socialism and Communism through Government Force
If ever the Democratic Party has gone full-bore Socialist/Communist, it is now. And, IMO, they are trying to obliquely foment insurrections, violating their oaths of office. I have heard several talk about and encourage real violence while pretending to defend democracy. They have an odd definition of it given the president is the only politician voted for by all citizens. Democrats and their leftist supporters have talked about wanting the president to put these insurrections down hoping for injuries or even deaths. Then they can then point fingers while claiming innocence. Those who think this is not so have been living under a rock or were born falling off a turnip truck.
I was told they get clothing, and furnishing allotments 2, or 3 times per year. That would explain why when they get evicted from an apartment, all the stuff left behind for the landlord to clean out. They even leave their pets, one left her mother in squaller, just a few months ago in 2025.
As an older disabled single woman on snap this is scary and also disappointing that they have a $5 billion contingency fund that they won’t use. Is this not what a contingency fund is for….
No, this is not what the contingency fund is for. In fact, it would be illegal to use it for funding SNAP. The contingency fund is for relief of unforeseen natural disasters. If a tornado blows through the corn belt, tearing up fields and destroying the harvest, the USDA will compensate the farmers’ losses from the contingency fund. If a dam breaks and washes away 100 acres of wheat fields, the contingency fund is there. It is NOT there to bail out failures of the federal government.
Democrat senators voted 12 times to not reopen the government. That is not an “unforeseen natural disaster”; that is a political party throwing a tantrum because they lost control of profligate spending on their priorities, like mutilating children and giving free healthcare to illegal aliens.
Elections have consequences. Did you vote for Democrat senators to represent you? If so, then you are getting what you voted for.
Trust me I hate what the dems are doing. Maybe I’m wrong, I thought Fema was for unforeseen natural disasters. I have a hard to believing that the usda’s contingency fund can’t be used for funding snap when something like this happens.
Even if their $5 billion contingency fund could be used for that, it would cover just over half of one month’s benefits, and then it would be gone. The U.S. spends $9 billion per month on SNAP.
I have many ppl I know will not have it next month. Also worried abt ssi/ssdi and Medicare/medicaid will be taken away. They heard republicans are taking that away. I don’t think that’s true. Tried to research that.
Churches & food banks are galore here and they are constantly reminding people to be sure and let others know they are there to help with all of this. But it has to be asked for. Nobody is going to go door to door begging people to come get help. Sometimes people are so used to being handed out things, they forget to ask for what they need.
very good and very balanced, Dr Jack. as a SNAP recipient myself, I appreciated your pragmatic yet compassionate take. I am a 64 yr old single mom, who though college-educated, I have opted to clean houses for a living so I could have more control over my time, in order to get my son with autism to his various extra therapies over the years. my son will be 'aging out' of the public school program next Spring and our entire situation will have to be rethought. at a time when most people my age are thinking about retirement, I am thinking about changing careers, to better manage what's best for my son (and my recently widowed, elderly mother, whom I care for, as well.)
though what I receive in EBT for myself and my 21 yr old with autism, only covers about a third of the groceries I buy in a month, it still will be missed in November. it all seems like political theater staged by people who likely never worried about the quality of food they could afford to buy, let alone missing a meal! or wonder which bills they can put off in order to pay others.
that said, it makes me sad when I see others 'judge' those of us who receive some assistance, imagining that we are all the stereotypical Welfare Queens, sucking off the government teat, while we sit home and watch soap operas all day. uh sorry no; since I was red-pilled when I had to realize that corporate-controlled government policies were part of the reason for my son's permanent disability, you're damn right I am gonna take whatever little scraps they may offer me. and now their 'games' result in taking a bit of that away... shame on them. (not on me!)
The responsibility for withholding 5 billion dollars of USDA contingency funds from SNAP rests with Secretary of Ag. Brooke Rollins. Rollins is a Big Ag-Big Pharma corporate deep stater. She serves the interests of Big Pharma, not farmers and consumers in her policies regarding Bird Flu. Her true allegiances are exposed by her lack of concern for family farms, and for American families who will go hungry who rely on the SNAP Program to feed their families.
EBT: -18 year old who rented a room from me was told my his dad to get it. I know he spent a lot of it at coffee shops.
-Saw my elderly friend at grocery store, she bought nothing but
Starbucks Frappuccinos with it. She otherwise buys real foods. She is needy some ways but owns a few homes.
-Man living on street told me he gets EBT.
Now that I’m recounting, I realize I have several more stories which all seem unfair to me. Here in Hawaii, food is expensive, but I find if I mostly avoid grocery stores, I can eat just fine - you can learn if you are willing.
WIC. I went with a sweet 42 year old pregnant friend to Safeway so she could get WIC foods. I was appalled by the process. For cereals and breads the foods offered were mostly unhealthy and processed. They give a lot of juices, which is not necessary and for her problematic since she’s gestational diabetic. More than that, even with store help the whole time, we had a terrible time trying to find the products which were on her WIC app. She ended up going to the register only to find products were not covered. Now, I want to say here too that this woman is not a citizen, has a green card, comes from a family with money and has made lots of money in past. Has her own money in home country. Now she works just a few hours per month which allows her to get medical and WIC benefits (don’t know about welfare).
Having 12% of the population on public assistance of this type isn't a sign of benevolence, but one of stupidity. The 80 hour requirement being either considered as harsh by recipients or reasonable by the author and others are equally ridiculous points of view. 80 hours a month is a hobby, not work. All to say, the slave class created by the Great Society will be our undoing. But not this weekend, the Democrats aren't quite ready to unleash the ferals.
The problem started back 40 + years ago when a woman was told to go get pregnant and they couldn’t kick her off the handouts. It was an every 3 year term, to re-apply. To see it with your own eyes, and hear it with your own ears, as I did. They are uneducated to do anything, and need to be forced to go to a trade school, so they can become a productive person.
We work and pay into a system that they broke for their own evil gains, at our expense.
EBT as currently constructed is a B.S. program that enables people to be chronic grifters on the rest of society. You can see their card balances at the check stand, sometimes as high as $6000. They can fill their carts with many types of junk or low nutrition food, and I have heard they can buy Doordash and the like. These people create excess demand for goods without having to earn it in any way which drives up prices for all. EBT needs to return to being a bare bones program based on dietary staples. Many middle class families don't have the purchasing power for food that the EBT class is showing on these card balances.
Much of the problems we are now facing would not have happened if there was medical freedom protected by the Constitution.

Balanced viewpoint, satisfying various reasonable perspectives. Thank you.
Agree

I know. I am hopeful those who do not need it and can work come up to the new ethos, which I also outlined as now in place.

And they can't visualize a different life, which is important for them to be energized to change.

I contact my congressman but he usually does the opposite of what is needed. Can snap be handled locally and or state not by the fed govt.?

This is a very good article and SNAP EBT AZDES needs to be re-invented

Shame on them, I agree.
I checked the post with ItsAI detector and it shows that it's 96% generated!
